Apart from Machu Picchu, almost everyone wants to see the Rainbow Mountains. They’re gorgeous and could be seen from the Ausangate Trek. Only in 2016 a one-day trek was organized for tourists and now it has become a must-see. The Vinincunca is the most popular one, but this area has many other rainbow mountains like the Palcoyo if you don’t want to do the tough hike. These mountains are located at an altitude of 5,000 meters, so I advice you to let your body acclimatize to Cusco first. Don’t do this during your first week!

Vinincunca

Be well prepared and get enough sleep, because this is a great trek to push your body limits! It’s a challenge many people like to take, but you can walk up at your own pace and it takes 4 hours maximum, after that you just go back down.

You’ll be picked up from your accommodation between 3 and 4 am and drive for 3 hours to the start of the trek. There you’ll get breakfast and you will start walking up. You can also choose to get a horse to carry you (or your stuff), but mostly the horse won’t help you on the steepest parts, as it’s too dangerous. After going down you’ll drive back to the village to have lunch and you’ll arrive in Cusco at around 7 pm.
